Hospitality Management (and Events Management) BTEC HNC (part-time)

This course aims to give you the skills and knowledge needed to gain a job or continue your career within the hospitality sector at a management level. The course combines academic study with practical skills development, and is designed to equip you for further study and career development in all aspects of the hotel, catering and hospitality industries.

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • English AND Maths GCSEs at grade A*-C/Functional Skills at level 2 AND
  • 2 A-Levels at C grade or above, OR
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Hospitality, OR
  • NVQ Level 3 in a catering or hospitality subject, OR
  • Completion of an Access to Higher Education course, OR
  • an equivalent Level 3 qualification.

Any trade experience would be beneficial, but is not essential. Entry may also be subject to a successful interview, where you will be asked to provide a short essay and complete a short piece of research on a topic provided. We welcome applications from mature students who will be considered individually on experience rather than qualifications.

Course content

During this course you will cover seven compulsory units.

Compulsory units:

  • The Contemporary Hospitality Industry
  • The Developing Manager
  • Customer Service
  • Food & Beverage Operations
  • Rooms Division Operations
  • Management Accounting of Hospitality
  • Industry Experience

You will also take three specialist units from the following options:

  • Food & Society
  • Menu Planning & Product Development
  • World Cuisine
  • Creative Patisserie (double unit)
  • On-licensed Trade Management
  • Business Health Check
  • Food Hygiene & The Environment
  • Nutrition & Diet
  • Contemporary Gastronomy (double unit)

  • Assessment methods

    Assessment is continuous on the course. A variety of methods of assessment will be used, including presentation, case studies, assignments, practical and group work.

    Further study and career options

    On successful completion of the HNC you can progress on to further study with our HND or choose to enter employment. The demand for senior staff in the hospitality industry is high, and this course will open up a wide range of career opportunities to you in this country and abroad.

    Additional information

    This course is taught over one to two days a week, which may include an evening session. Students are expected to dedicate at least one day a week to additional study and research for coursework. You will also be able to apply to become a member of the Institute of Hospitality (IoH). 2015 graduates can currently join for £25, and the IoH often runs such discounts, however, without special offers running, the fee can be up to £200.
